Everyday, I receive almost a dozen of invitations from friends to join their XYZ social network. Most of them are really crap, simply dumping mass crowd over there and displaying irritating advertisement banners. Wikipedia says there are almost 135 major active social networking sites by this time. Some of these networks are private, regional and even adultery.
However, it is worth joining few of these networks, based on your interest and the context of the network. The context can be professional, personal, entertainment and etc. The following social network sites are very popular for their service and worth joining them.
1. LinkedIn.com
Being a professional network, LinkedIn.com helps you to connect to other professionals of your profession. Also, LinkedIn displays relevant job advertisement matching your profile. LinkedIn is the easiest way to start building your professional network, posting your questions relevant to the profession, recommending professionals for their worth, being recommended by the professionals and sharing your professional, business contacts.
2. Facebook.com
A slick and complete web 2.0 based network. No reasons why, but you’ll simply be lured by the look and feel of the Facebook. Facebook is fast growing network and has been ranked as 5th most visited site in United States by Alexa. (Orkut scored 78th position in Alexa). Yet, Facebook attracts huge developers to host their application on Facebook and earn money from affiliates programs.
3. Myspace.com
If you are hooked on music, then go to Myspace. Myspace remained as the most popular social networking site in United States until Facebook overtook the record in early 2008.
4. Twitter.com
Though it claims to be a mirco blogging site, Twitter is a social connector too. As Social Media trend has been emerging today, Twitter is inevitably a place to be in. Twitter keeps your network posted with your updates very frequently. A lot of people consider Twitter to be a place to track their network updates, news and any upcoming trends.
5. Orkut.com
A lot of criticism goes around Orkut. Many people consider it is a crap place to be in. Orkut is simple and straight social networking site to customize your profile and track your friend’s profile updates. Orkut is the largest personal social networking site in Brazil and India.

I love to be in Facebook. Awesome! And then, LinkedIn.
Yeah Mani, but myspace is still a lot popular and the user base in myspace is still more than facebook. But facebook is becoming better everyday. I guess they(facebook) are unique and they pioneered developing and adding applications which makes facebook usage a lot interesting and fun. Anyway almost all the social networking sites followed suite.
True ram. Many companies now realized the importance of providing an open container for developer community.
