SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is a fast growing technique in internet marketing. Because, this helps websites to get listed on top of search results and thus helps bringing a huge visitors to the websites. There are plenty of SEO techniques, but we shall discuss the important and most-talked topic ‘Inbound Links’

What is an Inbound Link?

The link, by which other websites refer you site, is called Inbound Link (IBL). Vice-versa is called Outbound Link (OBL). For example, if ABC.com has a link to Example.com, then Example.com’s Inbound Link count is 1. This Inbound link earns a reputation point to Example.com. In this case, the ABC.com is called as Referrer of Example.com and Example.com is the target of the Inbound Link.

Why Inbound Links are important?

Search Engines like Google considers Inbound Links very important for Page Ranking of a website or webpage. Besides getting higher rank, the Inbound Links can bring huge traffic to the site. So, people run after creating a lot of Inbound Links to their site.
Inbound Link is one of the prime factors for PageRank calculation. But, this is not the only factor. As read from a Google report, Google uses nearly 200 factors to determine a site rank. But, some secrets reveal that this Inbound Link count can fuel a lot to PageRank calculation.
But, one more secret is – Google does not consider all Inbound Links for Page Ranking!

Why all Inbound Links are not considered for PageRanking of a site?

Well, people may pay out to advertisers to create Inbound Links to their site. Indeed, it happened some years ago. A lot of online marketing sites were born to create massive Inbound Links for paid service. Google learned from this and tagged such marketing sites as spam sites, and penalized the PageRank of all sites that had Inbound Links from the spam sites. And, it greatly affected the PageRank of the target websites

In case, if my site has Inbound Links from spam sites (without my knowledge), will I have a problem?

No. The Inbound Links from spam sites to your site will not be considered for Page Ranking of your site.

I’ll give a clear example:

Consider there are two spam sites (as tagged by Google for massive Inbound Link ads): SpamSite01.com and SpamSite02.com. And, each of them has an Inbound Link to your site Example.com. So, your site, Example.com has two spam Inbound Links. And, consider, there are two quality sites (means, sites having higher PageRank) Example1.com and Example.com, each having an Inbound Link to your site. So, you have two quality Inbound Link. Totally, you have 4 Inbound Links, out of which two are spams and two are quality. In this case, Google considers only the two quality Inbound Links, linking to your site and ignores the other two spam Inbound Links while calculating the PageRank of you site.

If I post my site link in Forums, will that account to Inbound Links?

No. This is the tricky part. Because, in this way, you can create millions of Inbound Link to your site, by simply leaving a post (with a link to you site) in various Forums . Google is smart enough to ignore such links. Let’s see this in depth.

Google always considers the Referrer’s URL’s depth while considering the Inbound Link. For instance, let’s consider you own the site Example.com and you post a reply to a topic in the form http://SampleForum.com/SEO/forum/topics/seo/page-rank.html and include the link to your site in your signature. So, one Inbound Link to your site is created from SampleForum.com, isn’t?

But the problem is, your site’s Inbound Link is found in very depth level of the Referrer URL (/SEO/forum/topics/seo/page-rank.html). So, Google may not consider this Inbound Link as very strong and may simply ignore it. But, if your Inbound Link is found on the front page of http://SampleForum.com, then Google will consider the Inbound Link as very strong. Because, it is just a common sense that you site should be having a big reputation to be listed on the front page of a site, that’s how the smart Google PageRank algorithm works.

So, If I buy hundred domains and simply give links to my site in the front page, then will I have 100 Inbound Links?

May not be. Because, the Inbound Link’s strength is also depend on the PageRank of the Referrer site (the site which has Inbound Link to you site). As aforesaid, if sites with poor PageRank link your site, then Google might not consider it. So, you might try to create Inbound Link from highly ranked sites.

If I have a lot of Outbound Links to other site, does that affect my PageRank?

No, but the problem is your users might leave your site and fly to other sites. But, still you should provide the relevant links to help your users to navigate your site content. This may give a good experience for the visitors to your site, and they may still retain their interest at your site. So, giving Outbound Links neither affects your PageRank nor your visitor affinity.
